Prostatic Artery Embolization

A Minimally Invasive Treatment For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Introduction to Prostatic Artery Embolization

Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is an innovative, minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in aging men that causes the prostate gland to enlarge, leading to urinary issues. PAE offers a promising alternative to traditional surgical interventions and has been gaining popularity due to its lower risk profile and faster recovery times.

What to Expect from PAE?

Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure starts with a small incision made in your upper thigh or wrist then an Interventional Radiologist (IR) uses x-ray imaging to guides a catheter to the vessels that supply blood to your prostate.

Once the IR reaches the desired location, tiny particles, the size of a grain of sand, called Embosphere® Microspheres are injected through the catheter into the blood vessels, decreasing blood flow to your prostate. The catheter is then repositioned to treat the other side of your prostate. By depriving the prostate of oxygenated blood, it shrinks, which results in alleviating your urinary symptoms.

After completing the embolization of the prostatic arteries, the catheter is gently removed. The procedure can take anywhere from 1-4 to perform.

Recovery Process

After the PAE procedure, some patients may experience burning urethra or frequent urination, but those symptoms tend to last only a few days and can be treated using non-opioid medications. Most patients will return to their normal activities within a week after the procedure. Relief in symptoms are seen usually 1-2 months after the procedure with continued improvement until 5-6 months afterwards.

Benefits of PAE

The PAE procedure offers patients many benefits compared to traditional surgical procedures such as:

  • Fast recovery time

  • Relieves lower urinary tract symptoms

  • Less likely to require urethral catheterization

  • Lower risk of sexual side effects

  • Reduced risk of urinary incontinence

  • Overall improvement in quality of life

Potential Side Effects and Risks of PAE

While PAE is generally considered a safe and effective treatment for BPH, it is not without potential side effects and risks. Some patients may experience:

  • Pain or discomfort at the catheter insertion site

  • Blood in the urine

  • Temporary urinary urgency or frequency

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Rarely, more serious complications such as infection or injury to the blood vessels

It's essential to discuss these potential side effects and risks with your doctor before deciding if PAE is the right treatment option for you.
